Japanese Energy-Saving Technologies

On March 6, 2025, the workshop “Connecting Vietnamese and Japanese Businesses towards the Application of Japanese Energy-Saving Technological Achievements” was held at the Melia Hanoi Hotel. This event was organized by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the Department of Innovation (SATI) under the Ministry of Science and Technology. MRIV International Co., Ltd. and the Green Development Center (GREENDC) were the supporting units for the event.

Overview of the Workshop

The workshop introduced advanced technological solutions from Japan, focusing on energy saving, waste treatment, and energy regeneration, contributing to the promotion of sustainable development and a green economy in Vietnam. Speakers from the National Technology Innovation Fund and leading Japanese companies shared groundbreaking solutions, which garnered significant interest from Vietnamese businesses, promising many potential collaborative projects in the future. Below are some of the technologies and solutions presented at the workshop.

JTOP Co., Ltd.’s New Generation Environmental Waste Filtration Technology:

The filtration system uses automatically regenerated activated carbon to treat water and exhaust gases.

With the technology utilizing superheated steam at high temperatures to evaporate and remove substances adhered to the activated carbon, it can regenerate the carbon without the need for replacement. This technology is not only effective in eliminating pollutants but also does not emit CO2 or generate secondary waste (sludge).

The technology has low investment and operational costs and can treat various chemicals, including hard-to-degrade substances. It is capable of handling a wide range of wastewater and exhaust gases. The technology helps save operational costs thanks to the automatic regeneration of activated carbon without the need for replacement and minimizes maintenance requirements.

Designed for industrial enterprises, the technology is available in both customized designs and mass-production standards, with the goal of reducing energy consumption, lowering energy costs, optimizing energy-saving and efficiency, and contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the environment for businesses.

Waste Heat Conversion Technology to Electricity

E-ThermoGentek Co., Ltd.’s waste heat conversion technology utilizes low-temperature waste heat below 300℃ to generate electricity using the flexible thermoelectric generator module “Flexina” – the world’s first flexible thermoelectric generator module.

The core principle of this thermoelectric conversion module is that electricity is generated when there is a temperature difference between semiconductor materials, effectively converting thermal energy directly into electrical energy. While traditional thermoelectric modules available on the market are fixed to rigid ceramic substrates and cannot be bent, the Flexina technology is made from bismuth telluride semiconductors attached to a flexible substrate. By taking advantage of Flexina’s flexibility, the structure can tightly adhere to exhaust pipes and motor surfaces, resulting in higher heat recovery efficiency compared to conventional thermoelectric generators.

The advantage of this technology is that it does not require battery replacement. Compared to other renewable energy solutions, such as binary power generation systems or organic Rankine cycle systems, which require more space and frequent maintenance due to moving parts, E-ThermoGentek’s technology is compact, easy to install in tight spaces, and has low maintenance costs due to the lack of moving components.

With the immense potential of waste heat, E-ThermoGentek’s technology aims to transform waste heat into useful energy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

GAINA Thermal Insulation Paint Technology

GAINA, developed by Nissin Sangyo Co., Ltd., is a thermal insulation paint technology created by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to protect the nose of space rockets. The composition of GAIN A consists of a special ceramic material and acrylic/silicone resin, offering energy-saving benefits both in summer and winter, day and night. This is achieved through its ability to insulate, prevent heat, and retain warmth, helping reduce energy costs for buildings and industrial facilities.

GAINA operates based on heat insulation and thermal reflection principles, thanks to its unique ceramic structures. The hollow ceramic particles reflect up to 95% of solar radiation, reducing heat transfer from the exterior to the interior, thus maintaining stable temperatures. Additionally, GAIN A helps evenly distribute heat, preventing localized hot spots on surfaces.

Beyond insulation, GAINA also possesses fire-resistant properties and can be applied to machinery such as dryers. The thermal insulation paint has been tested and proven to deliver energy-saving results, is environmentally friendly, and has been certified by several reputable organizations in Japan, including UNIDO.

Outstanding Advantages of GAINA Thermal Insulation Paint:

  • Excellent Insulation: Effectively reduces temperatures in various environments, contributing to significant energy savings.
  • Heat and Sound Resistance: It minimizes heat absorption and significantly reduces noise.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Made from safe materials, free of harmful chemicals, ensuring safety for health.
  • Durability: The paint has a long lifespan, providing long-term surface protection and reducing maintenance and repair costs.

Target Customers for GAINA Thermal Insulation Paint: GAINA’s thermal insulation solution is ideal for a wide range of applications, including Warehouses that need to reduce heat absorption from ceilings and roofs during the summer and maintain stable temperatures in winter. Shopping malls and supermarkets require solutions to minimize heat loss across entire areas, directly reducing energy consumption from air conditioning and ventilation systems. Additionally, this solution is suitable for a wide range of surfaces, including residential buildings, factories, construction projects, ships, vehicles, and even in the aerospace sector.

Heat Pump Solution:

Mayekawa’s advanced heat pump solutions optimize energy efficiency in industrial and commercial refrigeration systems.

The heat pump operates based on the reverse Carnot cycle – transferring heat from a low-temperature environment to a higher-temperature environment, similar to the operation of a refrigerator or air conditioning system. It uses refrigerants to absorb and release heat through stages: heat absorption, heating, heat release, and cooling.

Mayekawa’s products are widely applied in the food processing and cold storage industries. Their CO2 heat pump has dual functions: It serves as both a water heater and a refrigeration unit (supplying hot water to supplement boiler capacity while simultaneously providing cold water for air conditioning and refrigeration), significantly reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions.

Key advantages of the heat pump:

  • Energy savings: High efficiency with a COP ratio greater than 3 (meaning that for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, more than 3 kWh of thermal energy is produced).
  • CO2 emission reduction: Using cleaner energy, the system is more environmentally friendly compared to traditional fuel combustion.
  • Flexible operation: The system provides both heating and cooling with the same setup.

Long lifespan: The average lifespan is 15-20 years, with less maintenance required than traditional systems.

The heat pump solution applies to industrial plants, factories, and cold storage facilities: large-scale heating, utilizing waste heat, cooling equipment, and processes; residential buildings, hospitals, healthcare facilities, villas, and apartments: heating, cooling, and domestic hot water systems; agriculture and aquaculture: greenhouse heating and maintaining stable water temperatures.
